Enontekiö

The treelines end, and Finland’s highest mountains rise up in Enontekiö, the northwestern arm of Lapland. This northern municipality features a slightly milder climate compared to central Lapland, with tundra-like landscapes and river valleys. Muonio lies on the banks of the river of the same name. This tributary to the Tornio River, Europe’s largest free-flowing river, forms part of the border between Finland and Sweden. Utsjoki is as far north as north goes, both in Finland and the EU. A sparse population, about 50% Sámi, lives in scattered villages in rugged, tundra-like surroundings. While the majority of the land and water are wilderness areas, access is easy thanks to Everyone’s Right, and the nearby airports in Ivalo and Kirkenes, Norway.

Inari is the largest municipality in Finland but also one of the least populated. The seat of Sámi culture, Inari is the home of the Sámi parliament as well as the important Siida museum. With vast wilderness areas and the country’s two largest national parks, Inari has some of the most spectacular Arctic vistas in the world.

Sodankylä is a large municipality that stretches from the vast wildernesses of Sompio, at the western end of the Urho Kekkonen National Park, to the ski resort village of Luosto in the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In between, there are many villages, both rural Finnish and traditional Sámi, as well as the town of Sodankylä.
